Did You Know?
PCI Compliance Still a Concern
Can you trust the people working on your network?
Abacus continues to
see restaurateurs breached or lose money over PCI issues.
Abacus is concerned because many of our customers do not realize that they have
entrusted total control
of their PCI liability, whether hardware, software, or network infrastructure, to
the people working on their systems.
The
Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard
was created by major credit card companies to safeguard customer information. It is the
operator's responsibility to comply with the PCI laws. Keep in mind:
»
POS and Aloha are only one component of PCI compliancy—the network is a larger
component.
»
Any time you have someone working on your system, you risk falling out of
compliance.
Make sure you trust the person and their competence
because it's your exposure. They
could cause you liabilities.
Don't Be A Victim!
There are three aspects
of PCI compliancy:
»
Software version. Check to see if your
software is up to date or about to expire.
Here's why you should
upgrade.
»
Settings within the software. Make your software work for you.
»
Infrastructure and security is easily the hardest part of PCI. Payment Card
Industry Security
Standards Council (PCI SSC) have a
self
evaluation checklist to follow.
For your convenience, Abacus has provided a
Security Handbook for CISP Best Practices for point of sale operations.
Think it can't happen to you?
Dave & Buster's
recently suffered an attack, as reported in PCWorld Business
Center, in which three men were charged with hacking into the company's network and remotely installing "packet sniffer" software on point of sale servers at 11
locations throughout the U.S. They were able to log credit and payment card data
as it was sent from the branch locations to corporate headquarters, netting them
hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Telemarketing Scams
Abacus has learned that unscrupulous companies,
posing as PCI experts, are contacting customers and attempting to convince
them that they are not PCI compliant. These are merely telemarketers searching
for a new way to bilk unsuspecting businesses. Many times, they ask for access
to the network. Don't do it under any circumstances. Call Abacus first. We can
check your network and alleviate your concerns.
Abacus Can Help
Abacus understands the many problems our customers face. We have products
and services designed to create stronger P & L's.
For your convenience, Abacus has placed the complete Cardholder Information
Security Program (CISP)
Best
Practices on its website. While you're there, you can check out the
PCI DSS
Checklist to ensure your POS environment is up to specification. For complete
ease of mind, Radiant offers
Command Center, a PCI
Compliant Remote Access Tool.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your Abacus Customer Care
